How accurate is the BrickIndex scanner?

We test the scanner on real photos it has never seen and publish the results here, including where it gets things wrong. Last updated October 16, 2026.

85%first answer is the exact figure
95%right figure is in the top 5 matches
96%right figure is in the top 10
~2 stypical time to a result

Measured on 1,212 real photos of 827 different minifigures that the scanner had not seen before.

What the confidence score means

Every result shows a confidence score. It is calibrated against the test: when the scanner says 90 or more, it is right about 19 times in 20. Below that, check the other matches. BrickIndex shows them right under your photo whenever confidence is under 90.

Share of first answers that were correct, by the confidence score shown

A low score usually means the photo matches several look-alike variants of the same character. The right one is still in the top 5 about four times out of five.

Accuracy by theme

Themes with at least 25 test photos. Themes with many near-identical figures are harder. Castle has dozens of knights and soldiers that differ only in a small print or a helmet.

Popular figures vs. rarer ones

Rarer figures now score as well as popular ones.

Known limitations

  • Look-alike variants. Most mistakes are the right character in the wrong version, such as a different torso print, hair piece or leg color. Compare the top matches with your figure.
  • One figure per photo. For a group or a whole lot, use the lot appraiser.
  • Hard photos. Figures lying down, partly assembled, far away or in dim light are harder to match.
  • Very new releases can be missing until they appear in the public catalogs.
  • Phone photos are harder than seller photos. On 604 real in-app photos we checked by hand, the first answer was right 84% of the time and the right figure was in the top 5 99% of the time. Photos of a lone torso or head, or a figure missing its hat or helmet, are the hardest.
