How to identify a LEGO minifigure
Match a figure by its printed parts, accessories and catalog identifiers, with photo scanning as a starting point.
1. Photograph the details
Place one figure against a plain background in even light. Keep the torso, face and legs in focus. Separate nearby figures and loose accessories so the scanner can see the main subject. Start with a straight-on photo, then inspect the back and any alternate face yourself.
2. Compare the parts, not just the character
Two figures of the same character can use different head prints, torso designs, leg colors or headgear. Check the result against your actual figure. A familiar helmet on a different torso can create a combination that does not match a catalog entry.
- Face: expression, facial hair, alternate print and head color.
- Torso: front and back printing, arm colors and hand colors.
- Legs: length, color, printing and contrasting hips.
- Headgear: mold, color and printed details.
- Accessories: compare with the catalog image and set inventory.
3. Confirm the catalog identifier
BrickIndex shows Rebrickable minifigure IDs such as fig-000001 and, when matched, a BrickLink ID such as twn381. Use the identifier to distinguish variants with similar names. A set number identifies the set, rather than a unique figure.
Open the related sets to see where the figure is recorded. Set membership can help narrow a match, but a used collection may mix parts from several sets.
4. Check the result before valuing it
Photo identification produces a candidate match, not an authenticity certificate. If the image and your figure differ, try another photo or search by a distinctive printed detail. Once the variant matches, inspect its condition and compare the appropriate used or new value.
